Students and Families

Hi! The CDE wants to share an exciting new initiative that provides new ways for students with disabilities to show proficiency in what they’ve learned on their way to earning a high school diploma. We are providing resources and tools that teachers can use so that every student with disabilities can build on their own strengths and show what they have learned in a variety of ways—not just through multiple choice tests!

To continue to solicit public input about this initiative, the CDE would like to build this plan with you, we would like to know:

  • How do you feel about trying new ways to demonstrate learning? Are there particular approaches that make you excited or nervous?
  • What guidance or information would most benefit you and your family as you talk with teachers or counselors?
  • As we work to personalize learning experiences, do you think these tools and resources support students with disabilities in having options to demonstrate proficiency in their learning within courses required for graduation?

Review and provide feedback on the practice briefs linked below.

  • Do these tools give you new strategies?
  • To what degree do you see them as applicable to the IEP process in supporting students with disabilities in meeting proficiency to achieve graduation requirements?

Go to the High-Level Guidance Overview page to review and provide feedback on the overall strategy being utilized.

  • Is it clear?
  • Do you see how the initiative connects to graduation requirements for students with disabilities?

Explore the content and course examples to review and provide feedback on the following:

  • The degree to which the diploma requirements have been clearly stated within key courses required for graduation.
  • Whether the sample alternative means of expression options could be a viable form of demonstrating proficiency for you or your child.

Thank you for your important role and continued partnership in shaping an educational landscape where every student can thrive.
