Inclusive Access to a Diploma: Reimagining Proficiency for Students With Disabilities

Newly developed resources for school districts and leaders, educators, educational support staff, counselors, all student populations, and families

The California Department of Education (CDE) is recruiting your input to assist in reimagining how California schools create flexible and inclusive ways for students with disabilities to meet graduation requirements. All students benefit from having multiple ways to communicate academic proficiency, but for students with disabilities learning with the support of an individualized education program (IEP), these assessment options are essential to their being able to express their learning. The Inclusive Access to a Diploma: Reimagining Proficiency for Students with Disabilities initiative is designed to support California educational systems with the knowledge, skills, and tools to provide students with different options to express their proficiency in courses required to earn a high school diploma.

The CDE will refer to these expressions of proficiency options as alternative means of expression. The first step in establishing these flexible assessments in California starts with obtaining public feedback on the resources that have been developed. This temporary site will be available from August 1, 2024, through January 31, 2025, and is designed as an interactive way for users to give feedback on the materials and tools, prior to their formal release within the CDE CalTAN and California Educators Together websites.
